Recognizing the Signs of Pet Emergencies
Knowing when to bring your pet in can be tricky, but here are some surefire signs that it’s time to hit the gas and get to us, pronto:
- Difficulty Breathing: Wheezing, gasping, or labored breathing.
- Discolored Gums or Tongue: Blue or red gums or tongue are red flags.
- Significant Cuts or Wounds: More than just a scrape.
- Sudden Collapse or Difficulty Standing Up: Not just a lazy day.
- Unresponsiveness or Difficulty Arousing: Beyond mere sleepiness.
- Severe Reactions to Snake or Insect Bites: Swelling, redness, or pain.
- Animal Bites with Unknown Vaccination History: Risk of infections.
- Seizures: Single or multiple.
- Limping or Sudden Paralysis of Hind Legs (Especially in Cats): Could indicate serious issues.
- Anaphylactic Shock Symptoms: Excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, staggering, lethargy, or absence of urine production.
- Heatstroke Symptoms: Skin or facial swelling, hives, excessive salivation, vomiting, or diarrhea.
